Disability Resources

The Center for Autism and Related Disablities (CARD) provides this list as a courtesy for finding computer software and hardware that can be helpful for children with disabilities. However, inclusion on this page should not be considered an endorsement of the companies or products by CARD.

When choosing software, a recent guest speaker suggested to look for products that don't have too much extraneous animation, which can be confusing to your child. Also look for titles where the text is set on a white or similar background so that it can be easily read. Titles that are easy to navigate in or stop are also recommended.

Some suggested as good examples were On a Green Bus from Don Johnston, Inc. and titles from the Living Books series. This series is now defunct but can still be found at some stores and websites (try the Learning Company Online Store for some of the titles). The titles in the series include:

  • Arthur’s Birthday
  • Arthur’s Reading Race (or sometimes Room or Games)
  • Arthur's Teacher Trouble
  • Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight
  • Berenstain Bears in the Dark
  • Cat in the Hat
  • Dr. Seuss’s ABC
  • Green Eggs and Ham
  • Harry and the Haunted House
  • Just Grandma and Me
  • Little Monster at School
  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • The New Kid on the Block
  • Sheila Rae the Brave
  • Stellaluna
